Exciting Plans Thanks to National Lottery Funding

Mar 3, 2022

Welsh-language activities go from strength to strength thanks to Lottery funding.

Community concerts, history courses and fitness classes – just some of the successful events staged by Menter Caerdydd and Menter Iaith Bro Morgannwg, thanks to the National Community Lottery Fund.

Six months after receiving a grant for £80,500 to hold sessions for adults over a period of three years, the two local Welsh Language Initiatives are extending their provision to include more in-person events as the weather improves and restrictions are eased.

One essential part of the work is to establish partnerships with other organisations and charities. Current projects include activities organised in conjunction with Re-engage, Coed Lleol/Small Woods Wales, Live Music Now Wales, The National Botanic Garden of Wales and Learn Welsh Cardiff.

One recent success is the series of community concerts staged in partnership with Live Music Now. The free sessions are held in Rhiwbina and are aimed at the retired. The informal performances have a relaxed atmosphere and are suitable for those living with dementia.

Nia’s parents have really enjoyed the concerts. She says, “The sessions have been a lifeline for Mam and Dad. There aren’t many things Dad can really enjoy these days but he so looked forward to the Monday morning sessions and he was in such a good mood afterwards! They were great for Mam too as she was able to meet and chat to others.”

Menter Caerdydd and Menter Iaith Bro Morgannwg Chief Executive Heulyn Rees says, “The grant from the National Community Lottery Fund allows us to provide opportunities for adults to socialise, learn and develop new skills through the medium of Welsh. The aim is to create a community spirit and bring people together whatever their age. One important element of the work is staging events aimed specifically at the older generation. The concerts in conjunction with Live Music Now have received a fantastic response."

“As well as continuing our series of monthly talks and the popular online courses, Menter Caerdydd and Menter Iaith Bro Morgannwg will offer a full programme of in-person events over the coming months including bus trips and guided walks. We’re very grateful for the grant which gives us a solid foundation, allowing us to continue to build on our previous success and create new opportunities over the next few years.”
